HETRA Horse Academy


Horse Course 101

Who:  This course is for individuals with minimal horse experience who want to increase their knowledge level. Participants must be at least 14 years of age and must complete required paperwork.  Class size is 6-8 participants with a minimum of 3 to maintain the class offering.

When: Class will meet weekly on Tuesday evenings from 7:30 until 8:30 and run for twelve weeks from July 2 to September 17.  The course will consist of approximately 30 minutes of hands-on activity with the horses and an additional 30 minutes of classroom activities.

Objective: Learning objectives include improved understanding of horse behavior and communication, basic horse anatomy, haltering, grooming and tacking, and beginner ground handling skills. Grooming and Tacking certifications will be offered along the way. 

Cost: Current HETRA Volunteers – $120 (12 weeks)  – Community/Public – $240 (12 weeks)

Horse Course 102

Who: This course is for individuals who are ready for advanced horse handling skills. Lunging, round penning , etc. are examples of what will be covered. Those who are current HETRA horse groomer/tackers, leaders, and those that have successfully completed Horse Course 101 are ideal candidates. Participants must be 14 years of age and must complete required paperwork.  Class size is 6-8 participants with a minimum of 3 to maintain the class offering.

When: Class meets weekly on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 until 8:30 and runs for twelve weeks from July 3 to September 18.  The course will cover approximately 30 minutes of hands-on horse activity and an additional 30 minutes of classroom activities.

Objective: Participants will leave with a better understanding of horse behavior and communication, horse husbandry, advanced grooming, tacking, and leading. Certification will be offered for horse leaders.

Cost: Current HETRA Volunteers – $120 (12 weeks)  – Community/Public – $240 (12 weeks)
