A Behind-the-Scenes Look at How Horses Join the HETRA Herd

Let's talk about anxiety and EFMH services at HETRA

At HETRA, horse training isn’t just about teaching skills — it’s a months-long journey of conditioning and careful evaluation that prepares each horse to safely and confidently support our participants. On average, training lasts six to seven months and includes everything from biosecurity protocols to hands-on lesson experience.

Step 1: Quarantine & Gentle Introduction

Before joining the herd, each new horse begins with a two-week quarantine. This essential step protects the health of our herd and gives the horse time to settle in through light riding and hand walking — all done away from other horses. It’s a calm, intentional start that sets the tone for trust and safety.

Step 2: Toy Desensitization & Training

To prepare horses for the unexpected, we introduce them to toys and objects they may encounter during sessions. This desensitization helps build curiosity and strengthen their confidence.

We also use a specific, gentle leading method - unique to HETRA - that promotes body awareness and communication. It’s part of our systematic approach to reduce equine burnout and increase consistency among handlers and volunteers.

Step 3: Mock Sessions

Mock sessions allow horses to practice their future roles in a controlled, progressive way. This phase includes two types of training:

  • In-Conditioning Mocks: Around the one-month mark, horses begin practicing their potential specialties in quiet, distraction-free environments. These sessions simulate real scenarios and help build foundational skills. Each horse must complete five successful mocks before advancing.

  • In-Session Mocks: Horses then train during actual mounted lessons to adapt to real-world dynamics, including working on both sides of the arena. After five successful in-session mocks — with final approval from HETRA’s CEO or Program Director — the horse officially completes training.

Step 4: Post-Training Integration

Once training is complete, horses begin working with participants. They start with 1–2 sessions per week and gradually increase to 3–4, allowing them to build confidence and adapt to their new roles at a steady pace.

Why the Process Matters

Our training process ensures that every horse is matched to work that suits their strengths, keeps them engaged, and supports the safety and success of our programs. It’s one of the many ways HETRA invests in the well-being of our herd — and the people they serve.
