Life Skills
-
HETRA has long recognized the necessity for Life Skills services for individuals with disabilities and is proud to offer a year-round comprehensive Life Skills Training Program. Parents, caregivers, and service providers in our community are searching for life skills and vocational training programs that offer new approaches to development and education. Our agricultural and equine-based campus provides participants a hands-on learning experience where development takes place through an expanse of activity found in our unique agricultural barn environment.
The Life Skills Platform is used to encourage personal mental health growth in the areas of physiological and safety needs, belongingness and self-esteem, and self-actualization. From goals to communication and nutrition to a sense of belonging, Life Skills takes an active approach to mental health by using the horse partnership to reinforce the lesson. The premise of the program is growing self-awareness and practicing the weekly skills in both the classroom and in the barn environment.
This program is adaptable to fit the need of many different individuals or groups. Programming can be implemented with kids aging out of foster care, transitioning Veterans, sensory-challenged individuals, or developmentally disabled adults.
