Heartfelt with HETRA: Article Thirty
A Journey of Growth and Connection - Malissa Randecker's Story

Growing up in the rural community of Sidney, NE, Malissa Randecker had a childhood sprinkled with moments of freedom and adventure on horseback. Her grandfather, always welcoming and supportive, let her explore the pastures on a horse that once belonged to her mother. The exhilaration of galloping across the open fields, perhaps a bit faster than she should have, left a lasting mark on her. She grew to understand and appreciate the power of being with a horse—the deep sense of connection and the feeling of being truly alive.
Years later, she would rediscover this equine bond in a way she never expected. Her introduction to HETRA came through her husband, Derek, who learned about it from a customer at the bank where he works. The idea of checking it out lingered in the back of Malissa’s mind until they finally scheduled a visit for their son, Isaiah. That visit became the beginning of something extraordinary.
Isaiah began in the Therapy Services program, working on exercises that combined therapeutic riding with skill-building activities. Simple yet powerful tasks—like throwing a ball into a hoop while on horseback—helped strengthen his core muscles. After about four months, he progressed to the Adaptive Riding program, where he now rides under the guidance of his instructor, Rita Borgstadt. His sessions involve multi-step directions, trotting, and engaging games, all designed to challenge and empower him.

“Isaiah is a delight to work with,” Rita shares. “He has a great imagination, and his smile while riding is contagious. He works hard in the saddle and continues to make great strides in his riding. It’s quite fun to be able to work with him each week.”
Malissa vividly remembers a moment in Isaiah’s journey—his first time using reins on his own. Initially, he felt anxious and overwhelmed by the size of the horse. Recognizing this, HETRA made an adjustment, placing him on a smaller horse to help him build confidence. Now, a year and a half later, he is preparing to take on a bridle—another exciting step forward, guided by Rita’s encouragement. Malissa adds, “I like how Rita pushes him and has expectations. She is the right amount of compassionate and firm.”

Beyond the barn, the progress Isaiah has made has been profound. His growth isn’t just seen in his riding skills but in his everyday life. His ability to self-advocate at school has improved tremendously, allowing him to communicate his needs to teachers and peers. He has developed stronger emotional regulation, boosting his confidence both academically and socially. “We see a light come on in him and he has gained self-confidence,” Malissa says. “He’s a really happy kid.”
Isaiah has also participated in three of HETRA’s Miniature Horse Camps, where he enjoys leading and grooming the horses, forming a special connection with Cassidy, the instructor of the camps. These experiences have been enriching, fostering both joy and independence.
For Malissa, HETRA has become more than just a place for Isaiah—it’s a place for their whole family. “I love watching him out there, seeing him happy and enjoying himself. But HETRA impacts more than just Isaiah—it’s myself and our whole family. We feel a sense of community and connection. We’re surrounded by people who understand what we’re going through, and we have a team who truly knows and cares about him.”

One of the most valuable aspects of HETRA, Malissa notes, is the consistency it provides. From the instructors to the dedicated volunteers, the same familiar faces have supported Isaiah. “He has had the same volunteer side walkers with him for the last two years.” That stability has been invaluable. “It’s really good to have a consistent therapy in his life. I can just see how far he has come.”
HETRA, Malissa says, has a remarkable way of seeing the full potential in every person. Their understanding and compassion extend beyond the riders to embrace entire families. Through this journey, Malissa has not only watched Isaiah thrive but has also formed meaningful friendships with other parents who share similar experiences.
What began as a simple visit to explore a program has turned into a life-changing experience—one that continues to shape and inspire Isaiah, Malissa, and their family. And for that, they are forever grateful.
