Heartfelt with HETRA: Thirty-Four

The Reebles, Host Couple for the 25th Annual Blue Jeans and Dreams

Maeleigh's Strength at HETRA

The Reebles’ Introduction to HETRA

Unlike many of HETRA’s past host couples, the Reebles’ introduction to HETRA did not come through having a child in the program, but through a shared love of horses, rooted in Sherry Reeble’s lifelong passion for them. Dave often says his appreciation for horses came a bit later in life.

Shortly after moving to the Omaha area in 1991, Sherry saw a newspaper ad to “lease” a horse and immediately called to learn more. That call led to leasing a HETRA horse named Sonny, and soon the Reebles were regularly spending time at the barn, saddling up and riding.

At the time, HETRA leased horses to help offset the cost of care. That program has since changed, though Dave often jokes that it may have been, in part, because people like them could do a fair amount of “untraining” in a short time.

Growing Involvement and Dedication

What began with a horse quickly grew into something much deeper. The Reebles didn’t just fall in love with Sonny, but with HETRA itself, its people, its mission, and its community.

Sherry began volunteering in the barn, first helping with general chores, then growing into a sidewalker role, and eventually serving as Volunteer Coordinator. Dave stepped in as a side walker as well, offering support during sessions whenever it was needed.

Volunteers have always been at the heart of HETRA’s work. The Reebles’ willingness to step into multiple volunteer roles has been remembered and deeply appreciated, helping strengthen the supportive, hands-on community that makes HETRA’s programs possible.

Over the years, their connection to HETRA has only continued to grow. Dave joined the Board of Directors in 2021 and currently serves on both the Board and the Finance Committee.

HETRA’s Impact on the Reebles

When Dave first attended a session as a side walker, he was immediately struck by what he witnessed. He saw children who were initially non-communicative visibly light up the moment they connected with the horses and HETRA staff.

That moment of connection has stayed with both Dave and Sherry ever since.

The Reebles remain deeply grateful to be part of HETRA and continue to support its mission in meaningful ways. HETRA is equally grateful for Dave’s service on the Board, and for the continued support, time, and heart that both Dave and Sherry contribute as valued members of the HETRA family.
