Matt Walker: A Volunteer’s Journey of Joy at HETRA

When Matt Walker first stepped foot onto the HETRA grounds, he wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Unlike his wife, Lori—who had a lifelong love for horses—Matt had no prior experience with equines. It was Lori, a dedicated HETRA volunteer, who encouraged him to get involved, saying, “You should do this too! It’s an amazing organization.” What started as a simple suggestion turned into over six years (and counting) of meaningful connections, shared smiles, and a strong sense of purpose through service.

Matt’s journey with HETRA began as a sidewalker, a role he quickly realized was the perfect fit. “Any interactions I’ve had with horses have been here,” he says. “I’m a sidewalker—that’s what I enjoy, especially seeing the smiles from participants and knowing they’re experiencing something so positive.”

Over the years, Matt has built strong connections with many participants. He’s had the opportunity to work with some of the same individuals for multiple years, witnessing incredible progress along the way. One participant stands out in his memory for their enthusiasm and love of games like basketball. Their sessions often include both physical activity and cognitive challenges—whether it’s aiming for a basket or calling out fun trivia.

Matt has noticed meaningful improvements in posture, coordination, and confidence among the individuals he supports. He recalls the growth of one young participant in particular, who has made impressive gains in strength and engagement over the past six months. “It’s amazing to see the progress—whether it’s holding their head up more or interacting a little more each week,” he shares.

For Matt, it’s these small but powerful moments that make every session worthwhile and keep him coming back.

Matt emphasizes the unique team dynamic at HETRA: “I enjoy the personal connections that come with working alongside the participants. This is the only place I’ve seen such a rapport between the volunteer, participant, and therapist. It’s a very cohesive team unit.”

For Matt, volunteering isn’t just about giving his time—it’s about giving with purpose. “I want to give my time to an organization that uses all of its funding for the betterment of its participants,” he explains. “There’s no bureaucracy in a local organization like this… I know that my money and time are going to the participants and the individuals who need it.” His passion stems from a desire to help those facing hardships—a mission that aligns perfectly with HETRA’s purpose. “I want my time to go to something grassroots, in my community, where I can see the benefits every time I come here.”

Matt’s dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. Noah, HETRA’s Volunteer & Administrative Coordinator, speaks highly of him: “I’ve known Matt for a few years now. He’s a great volunteer—always timely, ready to work, and not afraid to step in where needed. He works wonderfully with our participants, always being supportive and encouraging, while bringing a smile with his ability to make others laugh.” Noah even recalls a moment during the COVID-19 pandemic when Matt’s video message to participants turned into a viral TikTok that garnered over a million views, showing the world the heart and humor he brings to the barn.

Outside of HETRA, Matt runs a saltwater aquarium maintenance business. His flexible schedule allows him to commit three hours every Wednesday—and often more when substitute shifts are needed. “As long as I’m capable, I don’t think I’ll give it up,” he says. “This community deserves attention, and I’m glad I can be a part of it.”

When asked about his favorite HETRA memory, Matt finds it hard to choose just one: “It’s all-encompassing. There are so many individual little moments that I cherish—it’s so hard to pick just one. I walk in with a smile, and I walk out with a bigger smile every time.”

Matt’s story is a powerful reminder of the difference one person can make. “HETRA represents helping complete strangers without expectation—and in today’s world, that’s rare,” he says. That rare and vital sense of purpose is what keeps Matt returning, week after week, making a lasting impact one smile at a time.
