Little Horses with a Big Impact
Our miniature horses are more than just adorable companions; they are essential members of our team who play a vital role in our therapy and education programs. We would like to introduce you to two of our shining stars: Stormy, a spirited 14-year-old mare, and Blue, a calm and steady 22-year-old mare. Together, they have been captivating hearts and enriching lives through our on-site learning programs and various community outreach efforts.
Stormy: The Life of the Party
Stormy, standing 30 inches tall, has been a part of the HETRA family since July, 2014. Since joining us at the young age of four, Stormy has embraced her role with an energy that is infectious to all. With her spunky personality, she truly is the life of the party. When let loose in the big arena, Stormy can often be seen galloping with delight, showcasing her love for speed and fun. Her engaging spirit makes her an outstanding participant in our Miniature On-Site Learning Program. Stormy loves to share her joyful energy with participants of all ages, easily adapting to whatever environment she finds herself in. Whether it's with an elementary school class or at one of the many community events she attends, her enthusiasm shines bright, bringing smiles to everyone around her.
Blue: The Steady-Eddie
On the opposite end of the spectrum is Blue, our "Steady-Eddie", who has been with HETRA since July, 2016. At 34 inches tall, Blue brings a sense of calm and reassurance to our programs. Known for her quiet demeanor, she is the horse that participants can always count on, especially those who may feel nervous around larger animals. Before joining HETRA, Blue had a diverse career as both a broodmare and a show horse, but her most meaningful work has been here with us for the past eight years.
Blue’s ability to comfort and inspire confidence is invaluable. She serves as a perfect companion for participants during our Ground Programming sessions, helping them learn the basics of leading and grooming horses. For those who may be apprehensive about interacting with larger horses, Blue provides the gentle reassurance they need to feel at ease.
Their Role at HETRA
Together, Blue and Stormy form a dynamic duo in our Miniature On-Site Learning Program, which allows us to bring hands-on horse education to various educational institutions and community organizations. Each year, they visit elementary schools, middle schools, and even senior living facilities, delivering a tailored curriculum aligned with the learning goals of the participating organization.
Through interactive sessions that focus on horse care, nutrition, and grooming, participants gain valuable knowledge while building confidence and empathy. Our Miniature Horse Camps, which last one to two days, serve as a fantastic introduction for kids eager to learn more about horses. With crafts, grooming sessions, and the joys of leading, these camps create lasting memories and foster a connection to the equestrian world.
Community Outreach & Friendship
Stormy and Blue always travel together, embodying the herd mentality that horses are naturally inclined towards. This friendship not only makes them more comfortable in busy environments but also reduces their stress levels when meeting new people and experiencing new sights and sounds at community outreach events.
With five miniature horses at HETRA, our mini crew collectively participates in approximately 40 visits annually, a number that continues to increase as more organizations recognize the amazing benefits of our programs.
Blue and Stormy are living examples of how miniature horses can transform lives through therapy, education, and community outreach. Their distinct personalities, along with their dedication to their roles at HETRA, inspire all of us, young and old, to learn, grow, and embrace the incredible bond we share with these magnificent creatures.
